What we do
What is involved in Timber Harvesting and Marketing?
There are many stages of this process. We can support you with one or more of these, and liaise with your own team as required.
Timber appraisal and valuation
Knowing what you have, and how much it could be worth, is key. We are happy to visit your woodland and advise on all aspects of timber harvesting, and planning for it. Tree species, quality, size and location all play a part, and we can help you understand what you’re looking at.
Harvesting plans and felling licence applications
Picking the right time to harvest timber is key. Fluctuations in timber markets, changeable site conditions – even the wrong time in the breeding cycle of your local bird populations – can make a big difference. We will help you develop a harvesting plan, and then apply for the relevant felling licenses. See our information on Grants and Regulations for more on this.
Tree marking and specification
We can carry out the walk-through of your woodland, to mark and measure the trees to be felled in advance felling works, particularly useful for high value trees or detailed thinning work.

Contractor selection and management
Choosing the right contractor to carry out your work is essential, if you don’t have an in-house team in place. We benefit from a relationship with our sister company Weeks Forestry, although we don’t work exclusively with them. This relationship gives us excellent market access and information on timber market movements, as well as access to reliable, high-quality contractors.
We maintain good working relationships with a range of contractors and timber merchants across the South West, and can recommend right people for your job, as required.

Timber marketing
We work with a wide range of tried-and-tested buyers and merchants, depending on the type and quality of the timber, and the location and wishes of our customers. We can negotiate, if you need us to, and use our existing relationships to ensure the best price for you.
Site supervision, contracts and compliance
Managing a tree-felling site for safety and compliance is a significant part of the process of felling trees, ensuring safety for workers, others using the woodland, wildlife and other sensitivities. We can take an active role in this process, if you need us to, or work with your team to create a compliance plan they can work with.
We regularly administer timber sales contracts, which govern and provide security during the sale process. We are able to oversee timber dispatch from site, monitor volumes of timber being sold and deal with invoicing on your behalf, too.
Post-harvest site management and restocking
Whether you are clearing an area for restocking, or carrying out storm clean-up, replanting is important. We can advise on how best to prepare for the new planting, and what steps can be taken in the immediate post-harvest period to make your life easier later – see our Woodland Management page for further details.
