What is Woodland Carbon?
Woodlands and other natural habitats sequester the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, meaning they remove CO2 from the atmosphere, and store it as biomass. Removing CO2 from the environment will help to mitigate man-made climate change, the biggest environmental issue of our time.
Carbon stored in biomass can be calculated and models used to predict its potential for CO2 storage over 100 years or more. Using the figures, carbon credits can be generated, each one representing a permanent removal of a tonne of CO2 from the atmosphere. With careful management, thousands of tonnes can be safely stored and carbon credits generated and used as offsets for your own business emissions or to sell to the market.
Creating new woodlands is an established method of generating UK-grown carbon credit offsets, for use by individuals and businesses. The process to quantify this is complicated and must be considered at the outset of any woodland creation project. While it works well and is effective, it is not always easy to understand. With our expertise, we can help you design your woodland creation scheme to maximise grant income and carbon credit generation, significantly boosting the financial forecasts of your woodland planting.
We work to help landowners maximise the potential for new woodlands to generate carbon units, formally recognised and regulated by the Woodland Carbon Code standard.
Carbon Credit income can be significant, but you need to structure and implement your project correctly from day one. Getting it wrong could reduce your income potential significantly.
Our Woodland Carbon Services
We offer support from the outset, unpicking the complex regulations and forecasting to allow you to generate income without the headache. We can work with woodland creation schemes across the UK for carbon credit projects.
Taking you step by step through the process, a typical journey looks like this:
- Free initial site assessment to establish whether your project is suitable for carbon credits
- Designing your project to maximise income from the scheme
- Forecasting and calculating your anticipated output of carbon credits
- Registration with the Woodland Carbon Code
- Working with third party auditors to complete validation and verification stages
- Ongoing monitoring and reporting and administration of Woodland Carbon Units
We are also very happy to integrate this support with our Grants & Regulations and Woodland Creation services, for projects in the South West.
